A tax accountant woke up at 5:00 a.m. sharp, and wasted no time to get out of bed, made the bed and went into the bathroom to freshen himself up. He stared at himself in the eye, hating how the bags under his eyes was an even darker shade of purple than it had been a week before. Today was the worst day.
Today was the day people tried to put off the taxes as late as possible, and start calling him for 'tax advice' on their tax matters. Like if their first rental property was going to reduce their tax burden.
With a sigh, he turned from the mirror after having washed his teeth and went to get his day started.
He got to the office just as his phone started ringing, he answered it on the fourth ring. He really did not want to face his first client on the phone this early in the morning.
"Anthony! Did you see what day today is?" his assistant asked. He had not checked who it was.
"Uh, a Tuesday?"
"No, it's April 16th! Did I oversleep? I am sooo sorry!"
"What are you talking about? It's the 15th--"
He was cut off by a TV left on in the break room, a news reporter speaking, the headlines blaring front and center.
THE WORLD SKIPS APRIL 15! IS IT TOO LATE TO FILE TAXES?
He stared at it, dumbfounded as he listened to what she was saying, having hung up the phone on his assistant.
"...and we don't know why the clocks have jumped forward a day, skipping the most important day in an American calendar, the Tax Day. We've asked a tax accountant to answer some questions... So, Mr. Thomas, what do you make of this? Will the tax payers be penalized for not having filed--er--yesterday?"
"Well, it is my opinion that we will not be likely to extend the Tax Day to the end of today..."
He tuned out, and grinned. This was a perfect excuse, an ingenious one, to get out of the job today. That will teach the tax payers to wait until the last day to file....
I heard the door open and he turned to my assistant and grinned, which made her already nervous jitters to shake her body even more with fear.
"We're not working today, dear. Let's go to breakfast! They all missed the day to file taxes!" Anthony said, the grin never leaving his face. It was starting to hurt his cheeks.
"S-sir?"
He ignored her as Anthony threw his arm around her shoulder, dragging her back outside to get some brunch at First Watch.
